What to Expect at a Hookah Lounge: A First-Timer's Guide

Published May 27, 2026 · 8 min read

Hookah lounges aren't complicated. A staff member packs the tobacco bowl, lights a charcoal, brings the rig to your table, and you and your group share the hose for the next hour or so. That's the whole thing. The first time can feel like there's more to know than there actually is.

This guide is for anyone walking into Vice for the first time. Second floor at 121 N Main in Historic Downtown Bryan, above Citrus & Salt. The room is 21 and over. The doors open at 10 PM Thursday through Saturday. What follows is how a session actually runs, what to wear, how to order, where to sit, and the few etiquette rules that matter.

A hookah session, start to finish

A bowl runs about 60 to 90 minutes. That's the unit. You sit down, look at the flavor list or ask the server, pick one, and a staff member brings the rig over a few minutes later. The hookah itself stands two or three feet tall and sits next to or between the booths.

The bowl on top holds the tobacco, called shisha. The base at the bottom holds water. The coal on top is the heat source. None of that is your job. Staff handles the prep, places the coal, swaps it out when it cools, rotates the foil, and replaces the bowl when it's spent. You handle the hose.

One bowl serves two to three people. A group of four can split one and rotate, or order two rigs. If you're solo, one bowl is yours. The bowl stays at your table the whole session. When it's done, the smoke thins out and the flavor flattens. That's the cue to order another, change flavors, or close out.

Pace is the part most first-timers get wrong. Long, gentle pulls produce smoke. Short, hard pulls produce coughing. Pull the smoke into your mouth, not your lungs. The cloud is the point.

What to wear, and what the room feels like

There's no dress code. People come in from dinner downstairs at Citrus & Salt, from a date on Main Street, from a game day at Kyle Field, from a Friday that started somewhere else. Jeans and a button-down read fine. So does a dress. So does a t-shirt and a flannel. The room runs warm because there are coals on tables, so a heavy jacket is more than you need.

Vice is the rebrand of Halo, the room that occupied this second-floor space before. Downtown Bryan is not Northgate. The crowd skews older than the freshman bars across University Drive. Alumni back for a reunion weekend, graduate students, locals on a date, parents in town for the game. It's the room people end up in once they've outgrown The Chicken.

DJs run the floor from 10 PM every night Vice is open. Friday is Latin Night with DJ Spaceman: reggaeton, bachata, salsa, until 2 AM.

How to order your first bowl

The flavor list at any hookah lounge is long. Three rough categories:

If you don't know what you want, say so. “First time, light, something with mint” is a complete order. Staff at Vice will pick the bowl for you.

Order a drink alongside. The bar runs full cocktail service until 2 AM. A spirit on the rocks holds up next to the smoke. So does a margarita. A heavy stout can compete with the bowl; lighter beers and cocktails sit alongside it better.

Hookah service at Vice ends at midnight Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. The bar runs until 2 AM. Plan the arc accordingly.

Etiquette: the hose, the coal, the room

Six rules. None of them are arbitrary.

That's the list. Hookah etiquette isn't stricter than restaurant etiquette. It's mostly common sense applied to a piece of equipment.

Walk in or reserve a booth?

Walk in for a Thursday or for the first two hours of any night. The room has table seating, lounge couches, and a row of booths along the wall.

Reserve a booth for a Friday or Saturday after 11 PM, for a birthday or bachelorette party, or for any group of six or more. Booths reserve by phone or text at (832) 285-4598. There's no online form yet. Give the size of the group and the night; the bar will quote a minimum.

VIP booths include bottle service. The bottle tier and the booth tier are linked. Ask when you call.

If you walk in on a Friday at midnight and the room is full, there's standing room at the bar and along the dance floor. Hookah service has ended by then anyway, so the booths roll over to the late-night DJ crowd.

Questions first-timers ask

How long does one hookah bowl last?
60 to 90 minutes. Some bowls run longer if the coal is rotated well; some flatten faster on a busy night when the rig sees harder use. When the smoke thins and the flavor goes flat, the bowl is spent. Order another, switch flavors, or close out.

How many people can share one bowl?
Two to three is the comfortable range. Four can split one and rotate, but a group of four often orders two rigs. Solo guests get one bowl to themselves. No rule against it.

Do I need to bring my own mouth tip?
No. Vice provides a fresh disposable mouth tip per person with every bowl. Don't share a hose without a new tip in place.

What's the difference between hookah and shisha?
Hookah is the pipe. Shisha is the tobacco that goes in the bowl. The two words get used interchangeably in casual conversation, but the distinction matters when ordering: “I'll have a hookah” means the rig and the session; “I'll have grape shisha” specifies the flavor in the bowl.

Is there an age requirement?
21 and over with valid ID. Texas raised the tobacco purchase age to 21 in 2019, and Vice enforces it at the door every night. Bring your ID.

Can I order food with my hookah session?
Vice runs a bar program, not a kitchen. For dinner before, Citrus & Salt is on the ground floor of the same building, and West End Elixir Co. is two blocks south at 107 S Main. Walk in for cocktails downstairs, head upstairs for hookah.

How much does a hookah session cost?
Pricing varies by bowl type and brand. Standard bowls sit in one tier, premium and signature blends in another. The current menu is linked in the navigation, or ask any staff member at the bar.

I've smoked hookah at a friend's house. Is a lounge different?
The equipment is the same. The pace is different. A house session is whatever you make of it; a lounge session is timed to a serviced bowl with staff rotating coals every 10 to 15 minutes. The bowl runs hotter and cleaner. The smoke is more consistent. The room is the difference.

What if I cough on my first pull?
Common. The fix is gentler pulls and shorter draws. Don't fill your lungs. Pull the smoke into your mouth, hold it for a moment, exhale. The cough is from too much volume too fast, not from anything wrong with the bowl.

Is hookah service open until 2 AM?
No. Vice opens at 10 PM Thursday through Saturday. The bar runs until 2 AM, but hookah service ends at midnight. Order your bowl by 11:30 if you want a full session.
